भारत में शूर, बुद्धिमान और साहसी कई वीरांगना पैदा हुई, जिनके नाम से ही मुगल सल्तनत काँपने लगती थी पर दुर्भाग्य की बात यह है कि भारत के इतिहास में उनको कहीं स्थान नहीं दिया गया इसके विपरीत क्रूर, लुटेरे, बलात्कारी मुगलों का इतिहास पढ़ाया जाता है । आज अगर सही इतिहास पढ़ाया जाए तो हमारी भावी पीढ़ी पश्चिमी संस्कृति की तरफ मुड़कर भी नही देखेगी इतना महान इतिहास है अपना ।

भारत की नारियों में अथाह सामर्थ्य है, अथाह शक्ति है। अपनी छुपी हुई शक्ति को जाग्रत करके अवश्य महान बन सकती है । आइये ऐसी एक महान नारी की याददाश्त को ताजा करते हैं ।
रानी दुर्गावतीका जन्म 10 जून, 1525 को तथा हिंदु कालगणनानुसार आषाढ शुक्ल द्वितीयाको चंदेल राजा कीर्ति सिंह तथा रानी कमलावतीके गर्भसे हुआ । वे बाल्यावस्थासे ही शूर, बुद्धिमान और साहसी थीं । उन्होंने युद्धकलाका प्रशिक्षण भी उसी समय लिया । प्रचाप (बंदूक) भाला, तलवार और धनुष-बाण चलानेमें वह प्रवीण थी । गोंड राज्यके शिल्पकार राजा संग्रामसिंह बहुत शूर तथा पराक्रमी थे । उनके सुपुत्र वीरदलपति सिंहका विवाह रानी दुर्गावतीके साथ वर्ष 1542 में हुआ । वर्ष 1541 में राजा संग्राम सिंहका निधन होनेसे राज्यका कार्यकाज वीरदलपति सिंह ही देखते थे । उन दोनोंका वैवाहिक जीवन 7-8 वर्ष अच्छेसे चल रहा था । इसी कालावधिमें उन्हें वीरनारायण सिंह नामक एक सुपुत्र भी हुआ ।
रानी दुर्गावतीने गोंड राजवंशवकी बागडोर (लगाम) थाम ली
दलपतशाहकी मृत्यु लगभग 1550 ईसवी सदीमें हुई । उस समय वीर नारायणकी आयु बहुत अल्प होनेके कारण, रानी दुर्गावतीने गोंड राज्यकी बागडोर (लगाम) अपने हाथोंमें थाम ली । अधर कायस्थ एवं मन ठाकुर, इन दो मंत्रियोंने सफलतापूर्वक तथा प्रभावी रूपसे राज्यका प्रशासन चलानेमें रानीकी मदद की । रानीने सिंगौरगढसे अपनी राजधानी चौरागढ स्थानांतरित की । सातपुडा पर्वतसे घिरे इस दुर्गका (किलेका) रणनीतिकी दृष्टिसे बडा महत्त्व था ।
कहा जाता है कि इस कालावधिमें व्यापार बडा फूला-फला । प्रजा संपन्न एवं समृद्ध थी । अपने पतिके पूर्वजोंकी तरह रानीने भी राज्यकी सीमा बढाई तथा बडी कुशलता, उदारता एवं साहसके साथ गोंडवनका राजनैतिक एकीकरण ( गर्हा-काटंगा) प्रस्थापित किया । राज्यके 23000 गांवोंमेंसे 12000 गांवोंका व्यवस्थापन उसकी सरकार करती थी । अच्छी तरहसे सुसज्जित सेनामें 20,000 घुडसवार तथा 1000 हाथीदलके साध बडी संख्यामें पैदलसेना भी अंतर्भूत थी । रानी दुर्गावतीमें सौंदर्य एवं उदारताका धैर्य एवं
बुद्धिमत्ताका सुंदर संगम था । अपनी प्रजाके सुखके लिए उन्होंने राज्यमें कई काम करवाए तथा अपनी प्रजाका ह्रदय (दिल) जीत लिया । जबलपुरके निकट ‘रानीताल’ नामका भव्य जलाशय बनवाया । उनकी पहलसे प्रेरित होकर उनके अनुयायियोंने चेरीतल का निर्माण किया तथा अधर कायस्थने जबलपुरसे तीन मीलकी दूरीपर अधरतलका निर्माण किया । उन्होंने अपने राज्यमें अध्ययनको भी बढावा दिया ।
आक्रमणकारी बाजबहादुर जैसे शक्तिशाली राजाको युद्ध में हराना
राजा दलपतिसिंहके निधनके उपरांत कुछ शत्रुओंकी कुदृष्टि इस समृद्धशाली राज्यपर पडी । मालवाका मांडलिक राजा बाजबहादुरने विचार किया, हम एक दिनमें गोंडवाना अपने अधिकारमें लेंगे । उसने बडी आशासे गोंडवानापर आक्रमण किया; परंतु रानीने उसे पराजित किया । उसका कारण था रानीका संगठन चातुर्य । रानी दुर्गावतीद्वारा बाजबहादुर जैसे शक्तिशाली राजाको युद्धमें हरानेसे उसकी कीर्ति सर्वदूर फैल गई । सम्राट अकबरके कानोंतक जब पहुंची तो वह चकित हो गया । रानीका साहस और पराक्रम देखकर उसके प्रति आदर व्यक्त करनेके लिए अपनी राजसभाके (दरबार) विद्वान `गोमहापात्र’ तथा `नरहरिमहापात्र’को रानीकी राजसभामें भेज दिया । रानीने भी उन्हें आदर तथा पुरस्कार देकर सम्मानित किया । इससे अकबरने सन् 1540 में वीरनारायणसिंहको राज्यका शासक मानकर स्वीकार किया । इस प्रकारसे शक्तिशाली राज्यसे मित्रता बढने लगी । रानी तलवारकी अपेक्षा बंदूकका प्रयोग अधिक करती थी । बंदूकसे लक्ष साधनेमें वह अधिक दक्ष थी । ‘एक गोली एक बली’, ऐसी उनकी आखेटकी पद्धति थी । रानी दुर्गावती राज्यकार्य संभालनेमें बहुत चतुर, पराक्रमी और दूरदर्शी थी ।
अकबरका सेनानी तीन बार रानिसे पराजित
अकबरने वर्ष 1563 में आसफ खान नामक बलाढ्य सेनानीको (सरदार) गोंडवानापर आक्रमण करने भेज दिया । यह समाचार मिलते ही रानीने अपनी व्यूहरचना आरंभ कर दी । सर्वप्रथम अपने विश्वसनीय दूतोंद्वारा अपने मांडलिक राजाओं तथा सेनानायकोंको सावधान हो जानेकी सूचनाएं भेज दीं । अपनी सेनाकी कुछ टुकडियोंको घने जंगलमें छिपा रखा और शेषको अपने साथ लेकर रानी निकल पडी । रानीने सैनिकोंको मार्गदर्शन किया । एक पर्वतकी तलहटीपर आसफ खान और रानी दुर्गावतीका सामना हुआ । बडे आवेशसे युद्ध हुआ । मुगल सेना विशाल थी । उसमें बंदूकधारी सैनिक अधिक थे । इस कारण रानीके सैनिक मरने लगे; परंतु इतनेमें जंगलमें छिपी सेनाने अचानक धनुष-बाणसे आक्रमण कर, बाणोंकी वर्षा की । इससे मुगल सेनाको भारी क्षति पहुंची और रानी दुर्गावतीने आसफ खानको पराजित किया । आसफ खानने एक वर्षकी अवधिमें ३ बार आक्रमण किया और तीनों ही बार वह पराजित हुआ ।
गोंडवानाकी स्वतंत्रताके लिए आत्मबलिदान देनेवाली रानी
अंतमें वर्ष 1564 में आसफखानने सिंगारगढपर घेरा डाला; परंतु रानी वहांसे भागनेमें सफल हुई । यह समाचार पाते ही आसफखानने रानीका पीछा किया । पुनः युद्ध आरंभ हो गया । दोनो ओरसे सैनिकोंको भारी क्षति पहुंची । रानी प्राणोंपर खेलकर युद्ध कर रही थीं । इतनेमें रानीके पुत्र वीरनारायण सिंहके अत्यंत घायल होनेका समाचार सुनकर सेनामें भगदड मच गई । सैनिक भागने लगे । रानीके पास केवल 300 सैनिक थे । उन्हीं सैनिकोंके साथ रानी स्वयं घायल होनेपर भी आसफखानसे शौर्यसे लड रही थी । उसकी अवस्था और परिस्थिति देखकर सैनिकोंने उसे सुरक्षित स्थानपर चलनेकी विनती की; परंतु रानीने कहा, ‘‘मैं युद्ध भूमि छोडकर नहीं जाऊंगी, इस युद्धमें मुझे विजय अथवा मृत्युमें से एक चाहिए ।” अंतमें घायल तथा थकी हुई अवस्थामें उसने एक सैनिकको पास बुलाकर कहा, “अब हमसे तलवार घुमाना असंभव है; परंतु हमारे शरीरका नख भी शत्रुके हाथ न लगे, यही हमारी अंतिम इच्छा है । इसलिए आप भालेसे हमें मार दीजिए । हमें वीरमृत्यु चाहिए और वह आप हमें दीजिए”; परंतु सैनिक वह साहस न कर सका, तो रानीने स्वयं ही अपनी तलवार गलेपर चला ली ।
वह दिन था 24 जून 1564 का, इस प्रकार युद्ध भूमिपर गोंडवानाके लिए अर्थात् अपने देशकी स्वतंत्रताके लिए अंतिम क्षणतक वह झूझती रही । गोंडवानापर वर्ष 1549 से 1564 अर्थात् 15 वर्ष तक रानी दुर्गावतीका अधिराज्य था, जो मुगलोंने नष्ट किया । इस प्रकार महान पराक्रमी रानी दुर्गावतीका अंत हुआ । इस महान वीरांगनाको हमारा शतशः प्रणाम !
जिस स्थानपर उन्होंने अपने प्राण त्याग किए, वह स्थान स्वतंत्रता सेनानियोंके लिए निरंतर प्रेरणाका स्रोत रहा है ।
उनकी स्मृतिमें 1883 में मध्यप्रदेश सरकारने जबलपुर विश्वविद्यालयका नाम रानी दुर्गावती विश्वविद्यालय रखा ।
इस बहादुर रानीके नामपर भारत सरकारने 24 जून 1988 को डाकका टिकट प्रचलित कर (जारी कर) उनके बलिदानको श्रद्धांजली अर्पित की ।
गोंडवानाको स्वतंत्र करने हेतु जिसने प्राणांतिक युद्ध किया और जिसके रुधिरकी प्रत्येक बूंदमें गोंडवानाके स्वतंत्रताकी लालसा थी, वह रणरागिनी थी महारानी दुर्गावती । उनका इतिहास हमें नित्य प्रेरणादायी है ।
आज की भारतीय नारियाँ इन आदर्श नारियों से प्रेरणा पाकर आगे बढ़े, पाश्चात्य संस्कृति की तरफ न भागे । भारत की नारियां अपने बच्चों में सदाचार, संयम आदि उत्तम संस्कारों का सिंचन करें तो वह दिन दूर नहीं, जिस दिन पूरे विश्व में भारतीय सनातन धर्म और संस्कृति की दिव्य पताका पुनः लहरायेगी।
